Sulfates
Namely, Sodium lauryl / laureth sulfate (SLS)
A harsh, cheap-to-produce detergent often derived from petroleum, sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate gives soaps, shampoos, and bath products their suds. Sulfates dry out skin, damage hair follicles, and even alter skin chemistry, allowing other chemicals to penetrate deeper and reach your bloodstream.
Parabens
(methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl)
These antibacterial chemicals are found in many cosmetics and personal care products. Used to preserve other ingredients and lengthen shelf lives of products, Parabens, which include methyl, propyl, ethyl, and butylparabens, may disrupt hormones, hinder fertility, and increase cancer risks.
DMDM Hydantoin aka (Glydant)
This organic preservative commonly found in shampoos and conditioners emits formaldehyde which hampers immune system function, irritates skin, and can even lead to cancer. Banned from personal care products in other nations such as Japan, DMDM hydantoin can be swapped out for safe preservatives such as ethylhexylglycerin and sodium benzoate.
Diazolidinyl or Imidazolidinyl UREA
You will find diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidinyl urea in scads of personal care products, used for its waterbinding, exfoliating, and preservative qualities. But these synthetic allergens produce formaldehyde and can certainly be substituted with salts, sugars, and other not so scary preservatives. While there are non synthetic forms of urea, these are derived from animal urine. Established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). Contains formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical, is toxic by inhalation, a strong irritant, and causes contact dermatitis.
Artificial Colors
Avoid synthetic dyes at all cost, they are too often made from coal tar, a well known carcinogen. Widely used in hair dyes and to color cosmetics and lotions, they appear on labels as D&C and FD&C followed by colors and numbers.
Other unpleasant stuff
DEA (diethanolamine) MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (triethanolamine)
This trifecta of amines, or ammonia compounds, also lends foamability to facial cleansers and haircare products.Synthetic emulsifiers. Highly acidic. These chemicals are already restricted in Europe due to known carcinogenic effects. Along with irritating eyes and skin, monoethanolamine (MEA), triethanolamine (TEA), and diethanolamine (DEA) can form cancer causing nitrosamines when they come in contact with nitrates. Dr. Samuel Epstein (Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois) says that repeated skin applications of DEA-based detergents resulted in a major increase in the incidence of liver and kidney cancer.
